13. Side-stepping the Secretary Problem, unwittingly (www.evalapply.org)

Having played both parts in the kabuki play that is employee-employer matchmaking, I feel the way we play it is a zero-sum game. I wish it were not so. When this post started life in 2024, as a wall of text chat message, it was brutal out there, on both sides of the software industry interview table. The ZIRP had ended. As of 2026, post-ZIRP reality has properly set in and remains bad ("AI" is a Fig Leaf (Enterprise Edition) for structural damage they self-inflicted, and if you look at Hyperscaler GPU depreciation schedules, they are making it order-of-magnitude worse). Set to that backdrop, here is a hopefully hopeful hiring anecdote where I think we avoided the so-called "Secretary Problem", framed within Optimal Stopping Theory. It can be done. Non-zero-sum hiring ought to be default-mode for any industry, AI or no AI.

Navigating the challenging landscape of job interviews in the software industry, the author reflects on the harsh realities faced by both candidates and employers since the end of the zero interest rate policy. With insights on the impact of AI and industry dynamics, this piece highlights the ongoing struggles in employee-employer matchmaking.

20. Training a model to identify AI-generated web content from structure alone (arxiv.org)

Word-level detectors identify unedited AI-generated text almost perfectly, but the literature documents their brittleness under rewording, and a word-level score neither characterizes a text nor identifies which AI model wrote it. We ask whether AI-generated text can be identified one level deeper, from structural signatures: how information is presented, in what order, with what evidence, and in what voice. We replicate StoryScope (Russell et al., 2026), which showed such patterns for AI-generated fiction, on commercial content: 2,250 pre-ChatGPT human blog posts from 268 company domains against 11,250 AI mirrors from five frontier models. A 214-feature instrument, applied by an LLM and validated in a human gold-annotation session (human-human kappa 0.928, human-model 0.946), detects AI posts from its 187 structural features alone at 98.0 macro-F1 on held-out companies, unchanged (98.1) when every AI post is reworded by its own model. The signal characterizes and attributes: AI posts share a tidy, self-announcing shape, 79.3% are attributed to the correct source against a 16.7% chance rate, and human posts occupy rare structural configurations. All effects replicate StoryScope's, consistent in direction and larger in magnitude. We release pipeline, instrument, prompts, code, and aggregate artifacts.

Vincent and Jochen from Sitefire are developing a model that can distinguish AI-generated web content based solely on its structure. As part of their efforts to assist marketing teams, they leverage insights from AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI to optimize web pages for better visibility.
