A colony of wood ants, Formica polyctena, became trapped in a Soviet-era nuclear bunker after falling through a ventilation pipe. Isolated in total darkness, these ants have built and maintained an earthen mound over the years, resorting to cannibalism for survival since they cannot return to their original nest.
